You know your client. You also have a good idea of what they would like to see on your social media profiles.

Why, then, would you implement small business social media best practices that go against your knowledge?

Your knowledge matters; don’t be bullied by experts.

While online marketing experts may show proof certain small business social media best practices “work”, that should NEVER trump your proven knowledge of your current and prospective customers.

To be clear, we’re not talking about the expert who brings new, valuable knowledge to your small business. These experts invest time to understand your business and target market. This new information, where you can clearly see the value for your business, will help your business grow.

For example, let’s say you do not believe your target audience is active on Pinterest. A social media marketing expert discusses this with you, and understands why you hold this belief about Pinterest. Then, that expert shows you examples of your target audience actively engaging on Pinterest.

That information is valuable, and could greatly enhance your business marketing efforts.

Experts are experts for a reason; have an open mind when discussing social media.

Generally Accepted Small Business Social Media Best Practices

The troublemakers, in this case, are the generally held small business social media best practices that you KNOW won’t help your business.

For example, let’s say you deliver food late night to college students, and your business is open from 11pm-3am. What benefit would posting to Facebook on a Wednesday afternoon have for your company?

True, that Facebook afternoon post may provide some value. But if you have limited time, and a limited budget, why waste it when your business isn’t even open?

Solution #3 – Your Knowledge Outweighs Small Business Social Media Best Practices

We often hear, “You’re the expert; you tell us what to do,” from our clients. While we respect and appreciate their trust, we recognize that NO ONE knows their business better than they do. The same applies to YOU and YOUR business.

The knowledge YOU have becomes invaluable when determining social media marketing strategy. Do not ignore this knowledge, no matter what the “experts” say.
